Hidden on the southern slopes of Mt. Pelion, almost untouched by time, the village of Pinakates is still very much unexplored territory. It was not before the late 1990's that a road was built from neighboring Vyzitsa to Pinakates which until then was accessible only by foot or mule. Probably, for this reason, Pinakates is not only the least-known among Pelion's cluster of villages, but it is also the best-preserved village in the region.

Just 20 km from Volos the region's capital, and in short walking distance from the villages of Vyzitsa and Milies, Pinakates is located 320 meters above sea level with fabulous Pagasetic Gulf views and dramatic sunsets. From the village square with its 1894 marble spring-fed fountain, a cobblestone path leads down the mountain to Kala Nera beach. In the past, this was the main route for people and goods between Pinakates, the village of Kala Nera, and the sea. In summer, Pinakates enjoys cool mountain breezes, and in winter there's nothing more gratifying than to cuddle in front of the fireplace with sea and snow as far as the eye can see.
